The badges of honour
THE roll call begins with the Royal Navy and Royal Marines, then the Army and the Royal Air Force. Standing on a surround of British granite, the memorial is the centrepiece of the cemetery, measuring an impressive 6.4 metres wide, and 2.5 metres high ( 21ft 4 ins x 8ft.4ins). By incorporating individual regimental and unit badges — 48 in all — the memorial also provides an historic reminder of the many Regiments and Corps which 50 years on no longer exist in their own right — for example, the Royal Leicestershire Regiment, the Highland Light Infantry, and the Royal Berkshire Regiment.
The overall costs are put at £200,000 — met entirely from public donations.
